"I don't say everything, but I paint everything." --
Pablo Picasso
On Long Island we are lucky enough to enjoy one of the most vibrant and culturally diverse demographics in the world. We're just a short (one hour or less) train ride from the cultural and artistic capital of the nation that is New York City, and a good deal of that rich and diverse culture originates from right here on the Island. With more than a hundred museums, historical societies, and sites including not one but two museums dedicated to Long Island's history of aviation plus the Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum, the Long Island Maritime Museum and the Sag Harbor Whaling Museum we enjoy and honor our region's important marine traditions.
From the Art Museums such as the Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington, the Nassau County Museum of Art, the Parrish Art Museum, and Guild Hall to the private galleries, leagues and art education opportunities Long Island offers some of the finest art collections in the country. The Long Island Museum of American Art, History & Carriages in Stony Brook is known worldwide for its carriage collection. Scientific exhibits and programs at the Cold Spring Harbor Labs, Brookhaven National Laboratory and the DNA Learning Center in Cold Spring Harbor teach us how important Long Island is to the history of mankind - did you know that DNA was discovered right here on our little island?
The Long Island Arts Council in Freeport nurtures the professional development of artists and arts organizations on Long Island, and encourages community involvement in the arts on Long Island, New York.
Long Island Arts Alliance is a collection of Long Island's not-for-profit arts institutions. The Alliance promotes efficient use of resources to encourage and enhance community participation in the arts. Representing the needs of its members, the Alliance fosters media coverage of the arts, provides diverse support services to member organizations and serves as an advocate for arts education in Long Island schools.
