On April 24, 1834 the Long Island Railroad Company was incorporated. The original purpose was to connect New York to Boston via a railroad and ferry line. The railroad was planned to extend to Long Island's North Fork and continue on via ferry to Stonington, Connecticut where it would continue as a railroad line to Boston.Work was slow but by 1837 work reached Hicksville, 1841 it extended to Farmingdale, 1842 to Deer Park, and Medford and then Greenport in 1844. On July 27, 1844 the first train made the trip from Brooklyn to Greenport. Learn more about the Long Island Railroad on the Long Island Rail Road History Page
