Senior Damion Brown (Kingston, Jamaica) scored his second goal of the season and set-up the game winner as the Stony Brook men’s soccer team won its third straight game with a 2-1 victory over Vermont on Wednesday. Freshman Leonardo Fernandes (North Babylon, N.Y.) tallied his team-leading fifth goal of the season for the Seawolves, who now own sole possession of third place (nine points) in the America East standings. Stony Brook is 4-9-2, 3-2-0 while Vermont is 1-8-5, 1-2-2.

The enthusiastic LaValle Stadium crowd enjoyed an early 1-0 lead from Stony Brook for the second straight game. After a foul gave a free kick to freshman Kyle Schlesinger (Selden, N.Y.), he sent a ball into the box that was headed by freshman Raphael Abreu (New York, N.Y.). The loose ball found Brown inside the box as he blasted it into the back of the net for the tally.

The Seawolves took a 2-0 advantage just five minutes into the second half. Brown sent a pass to the left side to Fernandes who had only Vermont keeper Tom Critz to beat. Fernandes flicked the ball over Critz and into the net as two Catamount defenders raced towards the goal line to clear it away.

Abreu nearly made it a three-goal game when he took a pass from Fernandes, used some creative dribbling and rifled a shot Critz made a splendid save on.

Redshirt freshman keeper Anthony Rogic (Boonton, N.J.), who made three saves on the night, had the save of the game in the 79^th minute when he dove to his left to save Matt Hennessey’s 23-yard attempt.

After Marty Gavin was shown a red card in the 86^th minute, Yannick Lewis scored on a throw-in from Sean Sweeney with just over three minutes to go in the game.

Brown’s career-high three points earned him America East Player of the Game. Lewis received the honor for Vermont.

Stony Brook is on the road one more time in the 2009 regular season, travelling to face New Hampshire. Saturday’s kick-off is slated for 1 pm.
