Win puts the Stony Brook University volleyball team back above the .500 mark!

Stony Brook University’s volleyball team outlasted Hartford on Sunday afternoon
in Pritchard Gymnasium, defeating the Hawks 3-1 (25-13, 25-16, 22-25, 25-10).
Senior Harmonie Calinda (Huntington, N.Y.) led the Seawolves with 16
kills while adding ten digs and three aces. Junior Ashley Headen (Alexandria, Va.) was also in double-digits for kills with ten while
blocking five Hartford attacks. With the win SBU moves back above the .500-mark
at 12-11 (4-3 America East) while Hartford drops to 7-18 (0-7).
Similar to the match these two teams played
earlier in the season, Stony Brook jumped out to a big lead at the start of the
first set. Two aces from junior Jeanette Gibbs (Port Jefferson, N.Y.)
along with four Hartford errors helped put the Seawolves up 8-1. The Hawks would
pull within five at 12-7, but Stony Brook’s offense proved to be too much as it
recorded a .321 attack percentage on the way to a 25-13 win.
The second set opened up with the two
teams trading scoring runs. Both teams recorded three runs of three or more
points and eventually found themselves knotted at 13-13 on a kill from
Hartford’s Sarah Boss. From there, Stony Brook took control of the set,
finishing the Hawks off with a 12-3 run. Calinda recorded four of her five kills
during the run and finished the set off with her third ace.
After recording just 13 kills and an attack percentage of
-.081 during the first two sets, Hartford’s offense clicked in the third. Erin
Macro’s seven kills led the Hawks’ attack which recorded 14 total kills while
swinging for a .296 hitting percentage. Stony Brook, which recorded 12 kills in
each of the four sets, committed a match-high seven errors in the third, which
allowed Hartford to pull out the 25-22 victory and force a fourth set.
Stony Brook wasted no time asserting itself in
the final set of the day, as it jumped out to a 6-1 lead on an ace from
freshman Corinne Perry (Northport, N.Y.). SBU maintained at least a
four-point cushion throughout the remainder of the match as they hit a red-hot
.524, committing just one error in 21 total attacks.
Gibbs recorded a team high 13 digs while Perry led the way
with 39 assists. Senior Lindsey Gordon (N. Patchogue, N.Y.) continued to
swing well, hitting an even .500 with nine kills and adding four blocks.
Stony Brook has an important weekend coming up
as they face Binghamton on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. before hosting Albany on
Sunday.
